In the historic centre of Tirano, the Hotel Centrale, BW Signature Collection, Tirano, Italy, fills a converted old grocery store across three floors of period charm in the Valtellina, with a small wellness and beauty corner of its own. Refined rooms and a warm welcome make a comfortable alpine base, with the high mountains and the Swiss border close by.

Tirano is the Italian terminus of the Bernina Express on the Bernina Railway, part of the UNESCO-listed Rhaetian Railway in the Albula/Bernina Landscapes, a feat of engineering whose little red train climbs past glaciers and the famous Brusio Spiral Viaduct over the Alps to St.
