After fifty years, the Hotel Al Caminetto WorldHotels Crafted, Torri del Benaco, Italy, has reinvented itself as a refined, adult-only design hotel on the eastern shore of Lake Garda, bound up with the place, its light, colours and scents. Clean, sinuous shapes, fine materials and discreet lighting run through the hotel, where hospitality and design meet in a calm, grown-up retreat.
Comfortable rooms and quiet spaces make it a place to slow down by the lake, with a garden and terraces open to the water and the hills, and a kitchen built on local lake fish, olive oil and Veneto wine. Torri del Benaco gathers around the Scaligero Castle of Torri del Benaco and a little harbour, its lanes lined with cafes and olive groves climbing the slopes behind, a car ferry crosses to Maderno on the far shore, sailing boats dot the water, and the cypress-dark hills and vineyards of the Veneto rise inland.
The lake stretches north toward the mountains and south toward the vineyards. Roman Verona with the Arena di Verona and its celebrated summer opera festival lies a short drive to the south, the historic limonaie (lemon houses) and grand villas of Lake Garda's western shore sit across the water, and the gentle Valpolicella wine hills spread inland from the lake.
